Neapolitan Mastiffs - General Maintenance

Neapolitan Mastiffs have short hair, and do not need much grooming. These dogs shed very little. If you remove loose dead hair with a rubber brush, it will be sufficient to keep the Neapolitan Mastiff's coat in a good condition.

Adult Neapolitan Mastiffs need exercised vigorously. Long walks twice a day are the necessary minimum.

The Neapolitan Mastiff prefers to be close to its family. It does well in apartment conditions, if there is a small yard available. Do not overfeed your dog. Visit a veterinarian to be sure your pet is in good health.

Neapolitan Mastiffs - History Outline

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a very ancient breed. Its origins can be traced back over five thousand years. The Neapolitan Mastiff of today has changed only slightly from its ancient ancestor. Neapolitan Mastiffs used to be guardians for the farmers' flock. The breed is related to other mastiff breeds. It was considered that these dogs were bred especially in order to fight in Roman Wars and in the Colosseum.

Neapolitan Mastiffs have always been valued for their strength, stamina and size. They were used as fighting dogs in the past. After the Second World War, the Neapolitan Mastiff was almost lost as a dog type. Italian painter Piero Scanziani established a breeding kennel in order to turn the mastiff-type dogs of Italy into the Neapolitan Mastiff, a formal breed. Neapolitan Mastiffs are considered to be a mix of a Lion, Gargoyle, and Mollosser.
